Ugly looks quite a bit different from his darling duckling brothers and sisters. Feeling rather foul about himself, the little fowl finds himself on an adventure of self-discovery, all the while unknowingly outwitting a very hungry Cat. Along the way, Ugly meets a whole flock of unique characters and finds out being different is not a bad thing to be.

The director is looking to cast 26-30 actors.

UGLY: 7th-12th grade, Male: Innocent, easily confused, and impressionable. Ugly doesn't understand why it is wrong to be different. However, his insecurities melt away as his character gradually changes from a gullible duckling to a wise swan, filled with self-esteem. He is the heart and soul of the show. Strong singer and actor. Soloist.

IDA: 7th-12th grade, Female: Ugly's mom. Ida is extremely protective of her son. She is sweet but feisty. Ida and Ugly's relationship is a key ingredient of the show. She is the one who teaches him that it is okay to be different. Strong singer (soprano) and actor. Soloist.

DRAKE: 7th-12th grade, Male: Ida's husband. Drake is a sarcastic, stereotypical sitcom father. Strong comedic timing and vocals. Soloist.

BEAKY, FLUFF, BILLY, DOWNY: 2nd-4th grade, Male/Female: Ducklings/Ugly's siblings. They are among the "popular" ones in the duck yard who enjoy making Ugly feel left out. Good acting and vocals. Sing as a group.

MAUREEN: 5th-12th grade, Female: She is a moorhen and Ida's best friend, also known as “aunt” to the ducklings. She can't resist a bit of good gossip. Strong singer and character actress. Duet.

THE CAT: 5th-12th grade, Male/Female: The sly, cunning villain of the show. He/she is manipulative, cunning, and witty. Character actor with comedic timing and strong vocals. Soloist.

GREYLAG: 7th-12th grade, Male: Greylag is a bit of a pompous and stuffy goose. He is a British military type who over-glorifies his mundane activities (i.e. migrating south) to the level of military operation status. Character actor and good vocals. Soloist.

DOT: 6th-12th grade, Female: Greylag's wife. Motherly, kind, and caring. She humors her husband's "over the top" actions. Good singer/actor. Soloist.

BARNACLES, SNOWY, PINKFOOT: 4th-12th grade, Male/Female: The geese in Greylag's "squad." Move well. Sing as a group.

THE BULLFROG: 6th-12th grade, Male: A laidback, self-confident frog who cheers Ugly up. Optimistic and funny, standup comedian type. Must have big personality and comedic timing. Strong singer. Soloist.

PENNY: 7th-12th grade, Female: The young, beautiful swan that becomes friends with Ugly. Kind and sweet.

FATHER SWAN, MOTHER SWAN, (7th-12th grade), BERWICK (2nd-8th grade): Penny's family. Kind, just like Penny. Berwick can be Male or Female.

GRACE: 5th-12th grade, Female: The most distinguished duck on the lake. Very aristocratic, she is considered the queen of the duck yard.

THE TURKEY: 5th-12th grade, Male: The headmaster of the ducklings' school. The Turkey is a bit snobbish and joins in the fun of teasing Ugly.

HENRIETTA: 5th-12th grade, Female: A hen and friend to Maureen. Loves to gossip.

JAY BIRD: 5th-12th grade, Male/Female: An investigative reporter. A typical TV news personality who just wants to exploit a good story.

BLIZZARD SOLOIST: 4th-12th grade, Female: Ensemble member who has a large solo in the blizzard scene. Strong soprano.

VOCAL/DANCE ENSEMBLE: 2nd-12th grade, Male/Female: The remaining actors in the company play a number of different roles. Throughout the action of the play, they take on roles as barnyard animals, froglets, and part of the blizzard scene. Singers and dancers.
